Sydney Home – Alexia Gnecchi Ruscone and Family

Treasured antiques and eclectic finds on the mantlepiece – cute monkey in the palm tree!

Living room

Today’s eclectic Sydney apartment is another that seems to have a truly international flair. No surprise, really, as designer Alexia Gnecchi Ruscone and her family are in equal parts Italian / Australian, and have spent a good deal of time living in Europe before settling here. After returning to Sydney from Milan in 2003, they spent time living in Double Bay and Avalon before moving to their current terrace apartment in Paddington.  They’ve been here now for three years.

Alexia lives here with husband Paolo, and grown-up kids Tania (21) and Vittorio (18), plus a string of nieces and nephews that love to come to visit Australia!  The whole family is incredibly creative – Alexia is the founder and key designer behind classic fashion accessories label Eclettica, with two stand alone stores in Sydney and stockists Australia-wide, whilst Paolo runs super popular vintage furniture store Junktique in Glebe.  Their daughter Tania has also recently launched her very own design business - TDesign …whilst Vittorio is in his first year of industrial design!  That’s one seriously impressive collective skill set – all under one roof!

In true European style, Alexia and Paolo have adorned every inch of their home in amazing artwork, antiques and collectables. Gallery-style hanging systems were installed early on to allow for Paolo’s growing collection of paintings and artwork.  Alexia says everything in the house has a sentimental value – ‘our collection tells our story, individually through our family pieces and together through our travels’.

Alexia’s most treasured aspect of this home is it’s cosy-ness – ‘we love coming home and throwing our shoes off!’ she says.  Of course after many years living in Milan, Alexia also adores the sunshine, blue skies, harbour and beaches of Sydney, and in particular the central location of this apartment in Paddington. ‘It’s a great spot – walking distance to fab cafes, book shops and cinema; once I get home from work I really don’t need to drive’ she says.

Big thanks to the Gnecchi Ruscone family for sharing their beautiful home with us today!  I feel it’s only fitting to sign off in Alexia’s signature style – ‘Ciao, Ciao, Tanti Baci !’ xx

For a teeny tiny country town, I have to say, Kyneton is totally punching above it’s weight in the interior design departament.  Today we have another beautiful home to share, again belonging to a clever local creative who made the decision to move to Victoria’s Macedon Ranges region in search of a tree change, a slightly more relaxed way of life, and a proper family-sized home for her family!

Tara Pearce moved to Kyneton from Yarraville in Melbourne four years ago with husband Taras, and kids Yorke (daughter – now 11 yrs) and Mak (son, now 6 yrs).   They’re now joined by crazy pups Buzz and Boris (because really, you can’t be living in the country without some animals running about).

After moving in, Tara says the first addition to their new home was the construction of a half pipe skate ramp in the backyard.  Nice to know they’ve got their priorities sorted!  I think this fact alone says so much about Tara and Taras – their busy family home is super stylish but relaxed and unfussy, and it’s clear this is a space created for family and for fun first and foremost!  In addition to the all important skate ramp(!!), Tara says there was also a lot of painting to be done inside and out, and they also installed bi-fold doors and a timber deck at the rear of the home to link the loungeroom to their generous new backgarden.

Favourite aspects of the home for Tara include the indoor / outdoor living space, and the fireplace – ‘in winter it is the centre of our home’ she says.  She also loves the amazing views of the beautiful trees surrounding the property, and of course the half pipe in the yard – ‘hours of entertainment for the kids and Taras!’

Tara also has lots of reasons to love her newfound hometown. ‘We have some of the top places to eat, great coffee, creative local folk and most importantly it’s a much slower pace – it’s a peaceful lifestyle’.

The move here has also kicked off a new career opportunity for Tara – after quitting her desk job, Tara was inspired to pursue her love of photography, and she now works on a variety of photographic projects both in town and in the country. She is particularly awesome at photographing kids and weddings!  Do take a moment to check out her website and peruse her beautiful shots!  (For weddings Tara shoots with her pal Erin Neale under the name Erin + Tara).

Massive thanks to Tara and family for sharing their beautiful home with us today..!   If you love Tara and Taras’ style I am thinking you will love their side project – The Vintage Yard Sale.  Previously the pair ran a sweet retail shop in Kyneton, but the shop nows lives exclusively online, and is full of beautiful vintage / industrial finds…!  Well worth a visit!

We’re back in Sydney again with today’s seriously lovely Australian Home – although I must say, this one could almost pass for a classic LA apartment, with it’s Spanish Mission styling and those amazing arched windows!  That top image of the sunroom  is such a stunner – totally magazine-cover fabulous (nice work Felix!).   It’s incredible how certain architectural details really give a space the feeling of being somehow so very ‘international’!

The lucky residents of this beautiful two bedroom apartment are Vanessa Steele, who runs her own PR company, and Peter Braig, a photographer (plus Macchiato the cat!).  This creative pair moved to Sydney from Melbourne five years ago, but hunted for three years before finding the perfect pad to call home.  ’We were looking for something special – it was worth the wait…’ says Vanessa!

One of just a handful of boutique apartments in a building known as ‘La Granada’ in Sydney’s leafy Bellevue Hill neighbourhood, this apartment really does have a special something going on. Tucked at the back of the block on the ground level, and opening out onto a leafy patio, it’s wonderfully private, and with windows on all sides, it feels more like a house than an apartment.  Vanessa puts that down also to the layout of the rooms and shape of the space.  ’ The square footprint makes it more like a house, and means we use every room’ she says.

Vanessa and Peter have been here just two years.  Since moving in they haven’t needed to do too much – other than polishing the floorboards and painting the walls white throughout. Of course they’ve also pulled together a tight, cohesive edit of furniture, soft furnishings and artworks to enhance the features of the space. I must say they’ve done such a stellar job of styling their home – all the colours and textures are so perfectly balanced, and not a thing out of place!  Vanessa and Peter’s favourite pieces at the moment are their antique Moroccan rugs in the living and dining rooms, found on their most recent overseas trip. Peter is originally from Europe, and the pair love to travel, inevitably collecting things to bring home with every trip!

It’s clear from chatting to Vanessa that she and Peter are still kind of pinching themselves, even two years after securing their beautiful apartment – and after 3 years of looking I would be too!  There is so much to love about the place – Vanessa says favourite elements include the Spanish Mission style of the space, the privacy, and their wonderful leafy outdoor area.  ’The courtyard is such a great space – excellent for parties, it extends into an outdoor room in the warmer months’ says Vanessa.

Massive thanks to Vanessa and Peter for sharing their beautiful home with us today! Aaaaww Sydney.  You’re so pretty.

Newcastle Home – Juliana Foong of High Tea with Mrs Woo

The Original Kauri floorboards were a welcome surprise when Julse and Ben ripped up the carpet here – ‘The cracks and wonkiness were a pleasant reminder of my childhood, spent at my grandparents’ home in Malaysia’. says Julse. Photo by Sean Fennessy, Styling / Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

‘How many dark, heavy depression era cupboards can you fit in a 20m2 room?’ jokes Juliana! ‘We’ve managed five, along with a miner’s couch, a hardwood coffee table, wine rack, bookshelf, speakers and an assortment of old boxes and suitcases. It seems the more we bring in the larger the room appears. We can’t explain it but needless to say our whole life is stored within these confines.’ Photo by Sean Fennessy, Styling / Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

When Sean and I stepped foot inside the unique home of Newcastle based designer Juliana Foong and her partner Benjamin Paul Gallagher, we instantly knew we’d hit the jackpot. As I recall, there was an audible sigh.  There is something so truly enchanting about this space – stepping across the threshold feels a little like entering another era!

The measured, calm confidence of this space really reflects it’s owners to a T – it has an umistakeably zen-like quality, with it’s rustic finishes, dramatic contrasts of light and dark, and monochromatic details. However, delve a little beneath the surface and you’ll see that whilst the palette is muted, there is nothing minimal about this home – every nook is filled with handcrafted details and vintage trinkets, styled to perfection by Juliana – who confessed during our visit that her favourite past time at home is ‘merchandising’!

Juliana (better known as ‘Julse’!) and Ben have been in this one bedroom apartment just shy of sixteen months.  ’Six of those months were spent without a kitchen and fifteen without a sink’ says Julse – ‘I can confidently recommend several toastie combinations’.  Needless to say there’s been a LOT of work done here over the last year!

On the very first day Julse and Ben first got the keys to their home, they celebrated with a carpet pulling up party!  ’It was simply exhilarating, especially when we uncovered original 120 year old kauri timber floorboards in the bedroom and parts of the lounge!’ says Julse. These old boards required special attention – to maintain their character, Ben insisted on restoring them by hand – ‘We used an orbital sander, hand sanded with fine grades of sand paper, and several coats of tung oil to bring them back to life’.

The kitchen was another big challenge – it was completely gutted, formica cupboards and vinyl flooring removed, brick work exposed, tiles and skirting boards removed.  The goal was to bring an openness and airiness to this tightly confined space – and it worked.  ’Our kitchen breathed a sigh of relief’ says Julse.

I guess you could describe both Ben and Julse as design purists.  Their treatment of this home has been to work back to original finishes, and to use reclaimed and recycled materials were used wherever possible in restoring and furnishing the house. ‘Reinterpreting old things has always been a favourite past time for the both of us. I find great comfort being surrounded by old world charm and nostalgia. There is so much history and beauty ingrained in the wrinkles of time’ says Julse.

Of course the tightly edited interior of this home is no surprise, given both Julse’ and Ben’s creative credentials.   Julse is one of three owner/designer/makers behind the womenswear label High Tea with Mrs Woo – she’s been in the business with her two sisters for over a decade.  Ben is a talented maker/designer of furniture and objects under the persona ‘Mr Book‘ – he creates furniture by hand utilising painstaking traditional techniques.  He also works as a roof restorer with his father by day – now there’s a set of super handy complementary skills!

When asked what they each love about their unique haven, Ben and Juliana brim with enthusiasm. ‘When the day is done, I retreat to my enclave of dark and dusty cupboards, and the comfort of what they contain’ says Ben.  ’I feel completely comfortable here’ says Julse, ‘Sat upon my Belucci rug, Caretaker upon the record player, Everdure blazing, glass in hand, I smile on a daily basis’.

Of course today’s post wouldn’t be complete without a lasting comment not just about this treasured home, but about the special spot where it is located!  Julse has such beautiful things to say about her much loved home town, I thought we should end with her sweet words -

‘I have lived in Newcastle ever since we migrated here in 1988′ says Julse. ‘I declared my love for her very early on in our relationship. We may have wavered along the way, but ultimately she knows I’m committed. The thing I love most about living in Newy is that I can survive here comfortably and quietly being a creative. She leaves me in my shell when I require it. And allows me to reappear when I’m feeling that bit social. It is easy to travel away from her and so reassuring on returning that, I am home. She is a great base. Anything is possible here’.

Massive thanks to Julse and Ben for sharing their beautiful apartment with us today.   If you love their home, do check out Juliana’s label, High Tea with Mrs Woo!  At their Sydney store this month the clever Foong sisters are staging a series of inspired ‘Pop-In’ creative collaborations with brands including Vixen and Wendy Voon Knits. Melbourne Home – Emilio Fuscaldo of NEST Architects

The Coburg home of Emilio Fuscaldo and Anna Krien. Photography – Sean Fennessy, styling / production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files

I guess it’s every young architect’s dream to design their very own house from scratch – especially after creating so many dream homes for other people!  For Emilio Fuscaldo of NEST architects and his partner, Anna Krien, a writer, this opportunity presented itself in a rather unexpected way.

After almost losing hope of securing a piece of land in their favourite pocket of Melbourne, an unusual opportunity presented itself. Basically, they found someone keen to subdivide their large residential block in the inner North – essentially Emilio and Anna bought their backyard!  The result is a hidden secret in the backstreets of Coburg – a unique, cleverly designed home tucked neatly behind an existing double fronted Californian Bungalow.  The new structure isn’t visible from the street, and can be accessed via a rear laneway.  How superbly modern and efficient is THAT!?

Emilio and Anna purchased their perfect pocket of land at Auction in April 2010.  By October their design was complete – after much deliberation they settled on a two bedroom home constructed in reclaimed red bricks with hardwood details, timber door frames and polished concrete throughout.  Of course being the home of an architect, the house faces North (!!) and takes in bucket loads of natural light, with a simple, open plan design reminiscent of a 1960′s beach house.

‘Anna was adamant that we had to live somewhere with big North-facing windows and plenty of heating’ says Emilio, who responded with a design that incorporates underfloor heating in the slab (SO toasty!).  ’We both wanted something pretty small and cosy, with a bit of a mid-century feel’ says Emilio. ‘Anna hates losing stuff behind cupboard doors, so we had to avoid the usual kitchen cupboard scenario’ explains Emilio, who instead opted for open shelves and storage where possible.  The pair selected red bricks as a reference to Emilio’s Italian ‘maintenance free’ heritage!

Emilio recalls it took about nine months to secure finance for their build, which eventually commenced in winter 2011.  Prior to building, Emilio roped in a few mates to dig a 35m trench from the street to the house. ‘We put gas, water, stormwater, telephone and electricity pipes in the trench – and I had four visits to a physiotherapist as a result’ says Emilio!  Nice one.  Definitely worth it!

The home was completed late last year, and in early December Emilio and Anna finally moved in.  They share the home with Mowgli (super cute puppy) and Puska (the cat), plus a menagerie of ‘walk-throughs’ – local cats and random chickens can often be found wandering their yard, whilst the original landowner still lives in her house on the front section of the block, with her four daughters, two dogs and a cat.  Emilio and Anna love the community feel of their new neighbourhood – ‘Our neighbours lean over the fence and give us tomatoes, our other neighbours have a walnut tree which rains sweet nuts throughout the year, and we often get visits from kids in the street who want to pat the cat and play with the dog’.

Of course, as it’s a custom design and still very new, Anna and Emilio are pretty love-struck by their new surroundings!  Anna loves the morning light through the front door and highlight windows, and she’s also obsessed with the floor heating in the concrete slab. (It was freezing during our visit, and I can attest to the wonders of the underfloor heating!).   Emilio is very proud of the fact that everything in the house comes with a story from a previous life.  ’The kitchen is an old workbench, the pantry is an old cobblers storage unit, the walls are made from recycled bricks, and the kitchen and bathroom sinks were rescued from a house being demolished in Sydney’  he says.

MASSIVE thanks to Emilio and Anna for sharing their very special home with us today!  If you love it, chances are you’ll also love Emilio’s other residential work – do pop over to the NEST architects website for a snoop at some of his other projects!

Sydney Home – Heidi Gill and Family

The Sydney home of stylist Heidi Gill and family.  All photos – Felix Forest, styling / production – Lucy Feagins.

Beautiful leafy Sydney courtyard garden!  All photos – Felix Forest, styling / production – Lucy Feagins.

Sydney greenery. Love it.  All photos - Felix Forest, styling / production – Lucy Feagins.

Can’t you just tell in an instant by the lush green (and very mini) garden that this is a Sydney home!?  It’s all about the FOLIAGE.  A garden overflowing with glossy green foliage is one thing worth moving to Sydney for, I reckon.  You’d have to break all water restriction rules in Melbourne to achieve this level of garden cuteness!

The home, in Sydney’s Woollahra, belongs to illustrator/stylist/merchandiser Heidi Gill, husband James and Jemima (8 yrs old) – they’ve been here almost four years. Aside from the sweet courtyard garden, this supremely pretty little house is such a perfect exercise in efficient city living!   It’s truly tiny – with just two bedrooms a kitchen / living space too small for a dining table – and yet it works so well for this busy family of three, plus Pepper the dog!  Amazing.

After buying the home, Heidi and James renovated the interior, with an emphasis on space efficiency – the result is a multi-use space which conceals clever storage in every nook, leaving just enough room for key furniture items. Bespoke cabinetry streamlines the kitchen / eating zone, and a cantilevered breakfast bench doubles as a dining table / workstation, leaving space for a just a 2 seater couch.  Somehow it all just fits together like Tetris, without an inch to spare!

Despite it’s modest proportions, Heidi’s home has a genuinely relaxed, comfortable feel – which I reckon can be put down in large part to her ‘stylist’s touch’ – a classic, understated and intuitive sense of style. The pared back palette – monochrome, blonde timbers, carerra marble, charcoal and a touch of mauve – gives the home a real sense of calm elegance and restraint.

Heidi says she loves her ‘postcard sized garden’ the most, as well as her pretty bedroom with its generous bay window.  As for the local area – the greatest drawcard for Heidi’s family is the proximitiy to Centennial park, and ‘Plane Trees, Plane Trees, Plane Trees’!

Massive thanks to Heidi and family for sharing their perfect pocket home with us today!
