Driven by a desire to create high quality, stylish and functional kids furniture and toys, Melbourne based designer Andrew Wolfe launched his company,Junior Wolf Kids Design, late last year.

Andrew originally studied Industrial Design at Swinburne University in Melbourne, then worked in retail design for close to 10 years, which gave him a great appreciation of quality manufacturing. However, the birth of his first child in 2015 inspired a major career change.

‘Becoming a father really changed my perspective on what was most important to me’ the designer explains. In mid-2016, Andrew left his regular job, with a plan to spend more time with his new family, and to follow his passion for furniture design. ‘I combined the two, to create Junior Wolf Kids Design,’ he explains.

Designing for kids brings with it a unique set of challenges. ‘Kids push things to their limits without even thinking about it… and then some!’ Andrew says. His main challenge has been to design robust, contemporary pieces that are tough and practical, but which also look great, and can be proudly placed in a living room, not banished to the kids bedrooms!

The Junior Wolf range is manufactured entirely from plywood with various surface finishes, then hand sanded and finished with beeswax. ‘Plywood is such an honest, beautiful material to look at and work with and it’s incredibly tough,’ Andrew says. The main production process is CNC cutting (computerised cutting), which results in sleek, interlocking contemporary forms, and lends itself to flat-packed designs.

Andrew is committed to local manufacturing and works with a network of suppliers here in Melbourne to produce all his products. Each item is hand finished and packaged in his home workshop.

Junior Wolf Kids Design is currently developing a range of nursery furniture and stylish storage solutions, as well as a range of wooden Australian animal toys!  Keep your eyes on their website for updates.
