HAY Sydney

We are HUGE fans of cult Danish design brand HAY, so we were more than a little excited when they opened their very own flagship store on Australian turf late last year.

Located in Sydney’s Surry Hills, the new HAY store is owned and operated by  Cult Design, and showcases the brand’s furniture, lighting and accessories in an apartment-like setting. We recently sent photographer Nikki To to capture it!

HAY was founded by husband and wife team Rolf and Mette Hay, along with business partner Troels Holch Povlsen, in 2002. From its inception, the brand has been driven by ambition to build a democratic design company – offering good design at an affordable price.

Initially launching with a contemporary furniture collection, in 2005 HAY launched an accessories line, ranging from paper goods and storage solutions to tableware and textiles, often created in collaboration with other esteemed international designers. The response was HUGE. HAY accessories have gathered a cult following all their own – we spot their distinctive stationery, glassware and textiles time and time again in so many homes and workplaces we admire. HAY is everywhere!

Today, HAY furniture, lighting and accessories is stocked across the globe, with flagship stores in Europe, Asia, and now Sydney. Spread over two floors, the new 250 metre square store in Sydney’s Surry Hills is managed and operated by Cult Design, who have been HAY’s exclusive Australian distributor since 2003.

‘The opening of HAY in Sydney is the culmination of 12 years partnership with our partner, Cult Design’ explains Rolf Hay. ‘We met Richard Munao of Cult at a fair in the very early days of HAY, and he has since then showed a lot of support and passion for our brand. Opening a HAY Store in Australia seems like a natural choice… the design cultures in Australia and Denmark have a lot in common’.

Richard Munao, Founder and Managing Director of Cult Design, echoes Rolf’s sentiments. ’HAY believes in joyful and straightforward aesthetics’ he explains. ‘The company may be rooted in Denmark and Danish design principles, but it has a global outlook, with a strong appeal in Australia’. Part of the appeal, he believes, is the balance between Scandinavian simplicity and an often surprising, quirky or humourous element. ‘The world of HAY is truly unique’ he adds.

The HAY Store in Surry Hills aims to offer a ‘full experience’ of the brand, showcasing furniture, lighting and accessories from the HAY and Wrong for Hay collections, in an apartment-like setting. A slice of (affordable!) Scandinavian style in central Sydney – yes please!
