Kim Wallace is a former graphic designer turned ceramicist, based in the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland, near Noosa.  Kim works from her home studio overlooking the surrounding native bushland and coast line, creating this sweet range of decorative ceramic vessels, which she sells online and at various stockists nationally, listed here. Originally born in the Netherlands, Kim first came to Australia in 2000 on a backpacking trip. 'I was travelling through sunny Queensland when I fell in love with an Aussie boy (who is now my husband) and this gorgeous country!  I basically never left' she recalls. She went on to study graphic design, which she loved, however after many years in the industry, she became tired of staring at a computer screen all day. 'I missed the process of creating something by hand more and more. In 2008 I decided to leave my job and started working with clay again, something I had dabbled in when I was younger. I haven’t looked back since!' she says. We love the organic, tactile and slightly 'wonky' feel of Kim's Ebb Tide range, which is inspired by colours and patterns found in nature, and by the treasures left by the receding tide, and uncovered by Kim on the many beach walks she takes with her family.  Once she has a design in mind, her vessels are primarily created using a process referred to as ‘handbuilding’, whereby large slabs of clay are rolled out and pieces are created by hand-cutting and shaping the forms. Occasionally she also uses a slipcasting process, where liquid clay and plaster moulds are used to create a base shape, before decorating and finishing by hand. At the moment Kim is enjoying family life with her two year old daughter and a new baby boy born just a 12 weeks ago. 'I will be taking it easy for just a little longer but later this year I cannot WAIT to get started on new ideas!' she says! 'My mind is buzzing with new products - ah these things you think about at during those crazy middle-of-the-night feeds!'.  She will be expanding the Ebb Tide collection with new vases, cheeseboards and other beautiful pieces later this year, and has a few exciting product collaborations with other local makers in development too. Check out Kim's online store for the full range and many more pics of her work!
