We first met Sydney based Georgina Brown a few months ago when we profiled her talented 13 year old daughter Kenya for Lisa's 'New Kids on the Blog' column!  SO it wasn't exactly surprising to discover that Georgina also has a few hidden creative talents of her own! Having recently returned home to Sydney after more than 5 years living in the USA, Georgina started creating these beautiful fabric mâché vessels from home earlier this year. They've since been picked up by retailers including Small Spaces in Sydney, and Montreux Trove in Melbourne. 'I have been really influenced by the Japanese aesthetic' says Georgina when asked how the inspiration came for these distinctive vessels.  'There is a perfect simplicity in Japanese design. I am really drawn to their vintage fabrics, wonderful textures and shades of blues'.  Predominately the bowls are covered in vintage shibori cloth, though Georgina has also incorporated vintage linens and ticking stripes into the work. 'They patchwork together beautifully' she says. Each bowl starts as a cardboard base with a distinct shape, and from there Georgina adds layers of paper mâché.  For the last few layers she uses a cotton twill fabric instead of paper, and then the final layer is vintage fabric.  They're lightweight, but surprisingly robust, and Georgina says they 'really serve no purpose but to be sculptural and beautiful'! Being handmade, Georgina's vessels are all one-offs, and prices vary from $70 - $140 depending on size and fabric.  They are available in Sydney from Small Spaces and Melbourne Montreux Trove have a few.  Georgina also has a very basic online shop here (sorry there isn't much in there currently!).
