Today Petina is sharing day 2 of Alt Design Summit and with each day I'm becoming more and more determined to go along with her in 2013!  If you have a blog or are considering starting one, this week's Guest Blog is a really great opportunity to learn from the pros. I especially love everything that the 'Growing A Readership' panel had to say, that is completely true of all the blogs I love reading. Thank so much Petina! - Jenny x

Welcome back everyone! Today began with Roundtable ‘small group’ discussions led by industry experts. There were a lot of topics to choose from and I decided to attend ‘Pitch Palooza – Better Homes & Gardens wants to hear your ideas’. It was a great small group and I came away with lots of ideas on how best to pitch magazines. I was also excited to win a free book!

Keynote Session And Lunch

Next up was Lunch with Pinterest founder Ben Silberman ‘How Pinterest became the next game changer.’

Speaker: Ben Silberman, Founder of Pinterest

Be willing to try new things.

Be close to people that inspire you. Dream big. Stop talking and just go do it.

Move fast and break things.

Favourite quotes:

“People succeed because they just don’t stop.”

"If you don't bet on yourself, no one else will.”

“Discovering things about the world will help us discover more about who we are.”

“There are so many things that are just good enough – why not pick the one that’s most beautiful?”.

Ben gave my favourite speech from the whole summit. He was also the only speaker to ever get a standing ovation at Alt Summit.

Panelists: Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day, Kelly Beall of Design Crush, Nicole Balch of Making it Lovely, and Maggie Mason of Mighty Girl.

Commit to creating good, original content.

The more clean and polished your blog design is, the more people will believe it.

Work smarter not harder.

Don’t check stats everyday. You are putting energy in the wrong place. Develop compelling content instead.

Less is more.

Personal narrative – share who you are and your readership will grow.

Don’t sit on ideas. Just start.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more panel tips and some pics from the spectacular Friday night sponsored mini parties.
