Adelaide Home – Daniel To and Emma Aiston

The hallway of Danel To and Emma Aiston – complete with designer Pashley bikes!  (a matching pair, of course!)

Shared study / workspace

Another smashing South Australian home today… this one is a super cute Victorian 2-bedroom home of Adelaide design duo Daniel To and Emma Aiston, aka Daniel : Emma!

This supremely talented pair were such incredibly generous hosts during my recent trip to Adelaide, taking me all over town to visit their favourite haunts, plying me with delicious meals, peculiar asian ice creams and an SA staple – Cibo coffee.  Of course I am a massive fan of Daniel and Emma’s work and I am always impressed with their incredible sense of style –  so whilst in SA I knew I had to seize the opportunity to shoot their home.  I had an inkling it would be cute and quirky and full of ‘not available in Australia’ goodness.  I wasn’t wrong!

Daniel and Emma live in the semi-industrial pocket of Adelaide known as Rosewater/ Port Adelaide.  It’s an area ripe for gentrification – 1km to the port, 5km to the beach, 12km to the city, and full of fantastic old brick warehouses, most of which appear to be vacant.  If this were Melbourne each would be filled with artists, designers and fresh faced uni graduates looking to set up hipster bike shops / cafes / bars.  But this is Adelaide, so there’s none of that going on just yet.  Watch this space!

Daniel and Emma have been here just 2.5 years.   On the first weekend after taking ownership, they set to work ripping out carpet, curtains, built in robes and lino, then polishing the floor boards and painting everything white. They’ve done little else and certainly nothing structural (yet!), other than filling the home with their unique collection of furniture and cute collectables, many of which are souvenirs from Daniel and Emma’s time living and working in London.

When asked for their favourite aspects of the home, Daniel and Emma have too many to mention!  Emma loves the stripey bullnose verandah, Louis Ghost Chair in the bedroom (a wedding gift) and tin toys purchased from her previous employer Thorsten van Elten in London.  Their twin ‘Pashley’ bicycles also score a mention, and Daniel cutely says ‘Emma is the best thing in the house’. Awww!

Massive thanks to Emma and Daniel for sharing their sweet nest with us today!  AND if you are a big fan of their work do come and check out their designed objects / stationery items in person at The Design Files Open House - opening TOMORROW! OMG.

Behind the Scenes with Jardan – The Production Line

Yesterday we saw the initial sketches for the brand new range of Jardan‘s outdoor furniture and today we are seeing the first pieces being produced. With lashings of blaze blue, fresh watermelon and classic white, the furniture for TDF Open House is looking amazing thanks to Jardan! -Jenny x

Table bases for our outdoor range looking super-fresh in blaze blue.

Today, Jardan invites all of The Design Files reader to peek behind our curtains and have a sticky beak. We’d like to show you snaps and snippets of new things to come, as well as the hardworking crew that get us to the finish line.

Sneak peek into the intricate metal work involved in the fabrication of the new outdoor dining chair.

Being Melbourne born and bred, we like sourcing local talents to help us fill the gaps in our production capabilities. Our local fabricators are all located within a few kilometres of our main factory, which reduces our carbon footprint.

At the top, wire base coffee tables completed and ready to be glammed up! Below, the coffee tables in the powder coating booth which are then baked to complete the process.

For our new outdoor range, our design team have been assisted by a talented group of metal fabricators who have helped to pull the design together and transform concept to reality. Our timber factory, located just down the road from our head office, is where all the elements for the outdoor range come together. Assembly is one of the most exciting parts of the design and development process. It is where you get to see your idea come to life!

Our fancy Flynn stools get a splash of juicy colour. So perfect for The Design Files Open House!

Fleshing out the design with the help of computer-aided drawings for prototyping purposes

At Jardan, we like to keep it fresh so we try to maintain the momentum of our design development throughout the year. Our team of creative minds are constantly churning out new ideas and working with very experienced and knowledgeable R&D team to prototype our new range. For the new outdoor range we started from the ground up and investigated various materials and finishes, some which we’ve never used before. At this point we start the transformation from the intangible to the tangible.

Jardan joins the Guest Blog!

Jardan join us on the Guest Blog this week

This week in a TDF Open House special, local furniture company Jardan are joining us on the Guest Blog!

It’s no secret we heart Jardan rather a lot around here.   As outlined in my interview with Jardan’s Melbourne director / designer Nick Garnham late last year, Jardan manufacture all their furniture right here in Melbourne, and the entire range is also environmentally accredited.

We have had the great pleasure of dealing closely with Nick and his team during the planning and preparations for TDF Open House and I have to say we think they’re all pretty awesome.  They’re just so super relaxed and friendly, and it’s so inspiring to see such an energetic, family run company manufacturing locally and thriving.  We feel very lucky to be showcasing their seriously gorgeous furniture at our big event this week.  The house is looking very cute and VERY colourful!

Do pop by the Guest Blog all week for a little look at Jardan behind the scenes… You’ll see a little sneak peek of their brand new outdoor range (launching at TDF Open House later this week!) and you’ll get to know some of the talented team who design and create Jardan’s extensive range.  THEN when you pop in and visit us later this week at TDF Open House, perhaps you’ll spot a few familiar faces!

Massive thanks to Linda at Jardan for her stellar work on both TDFOH prep and the Guest Blog simultaneously!  We love your work lady.
