Today we meet Maryann Talia Pau, a Melbourne artist who specialises in body adornment using weaving and traditional craft techniques from her native Samoa.  Maryann is running a Weaving Fabric workshop at Harvest Workroom, all the details are on the makeUp website. - Jenny x

When you meet Maryann Talia Pau it's hard not to be drawn in by her warm and vibrant personality, as you can see by these photos, her work also reflects these qualities. Maryann makes one-off woven pieces, using a mixture of materials that range from found objects to traditional siapo (Samoan bark cloth).

Maryann explains her work - "I am an artist and a weaver. My work in body adornment and dress references Pacific Island craft and culture. I wanted to wear jewellery that connected me with my ancestors and my community, so I made my own, beginning with materials passed down from my mother and aunties. I now make and design pieces that incorporate new materials and craft techniques along with materials from the Pacific"

For makeUp, Maryann is running a workshop called Weaving Fabric with Mayann Talia Pau. In the workshop students will make a basket using Pacific Island weaving techniques using handprinted fabric remnants from Harvest Textiles combined with pandanus from Samoa. To book into Maryann's workshop, head to our website.

For more info about Maryann you can read an interview with her on our blog and this great video of pieces she made for the Social Studio.
