Modern Times

Modern Times – a mid-century furniture Pop Up, until June 12th.  Hans Wegner couches and a Designed in Brunswick cushion. Artwork top right by Ellie Malin.  Timber Squirrel bottom right by Bride & Wolfe.

June must be unofficial month of the Pop-up!  I’ve listed a few lovely  retail events in the left-hand sidebar this week… and just in case you missed it last week, here’s another!  Modern Times has popped up in St Kilda with a one-off collection of vintage mid century furniture, plus a sweet range of accessories and artworks by local designers inspired by the modernist style.  Alongside vintage pieces by Hans Wegner and Charles & Ray Eames you’ll find artwork by Printspace and Ellie Malin, soft furnishings by Designed in Brunswick and Retro Print Revival, timber accessories by Bride & Wolfe and many more!  It’s such a thoughtfully curated collection, and the prices are surprisingly friendly.

Modern Times is the creation of Melbourne design enthusiasts Amy Voterakis and her hubbie Joel, who may or may not have the same surname as her, I cannot confirm for sure :)

There are only 2 weeks left to visit Modern Times so hop to it if you haven’t visited already!

ps. You may have noticed Modern Times is a TDF sponsor this month.  I’m super sensitive about editorial independence as you all know – PLEASE BE ASSURED I wouldn’t blog it if it wasn’t awesome.  Promise.

The back of a couch never looked so good.  Nice work Mr Wegner.

Event Ideas by Ojoli – Candy Coloured Wedding

After a beautiful Blue and White Tea Party yesterday, Amanda is back today with a Candy Coloured Wedding! Lovely pastels, a much coveted Confetti System garland and mismatched chairs- you can easily run with this theme for any event you fancy! -Jenny x

Inspiring the Candy Coloured Wedding – Confetti System garland available from Third Drawer Down and outdoor table setting via I believe in unicorns

The starting point for this Candy Coloured Wedding concept came from one of Confetti Systems’ garlands. Confetti System offer sublime event decorating products that I would love to see incorporated into a wedding event design.  Their items are a little more expensive, but could make for great thank you gifts after a wedding.

I envisage this concept working really well against a setting where the colour accents and textures are quite juxtaposed. The illustration here is of an old woolshed on the farm. The amazing craftsmanship of these old buildings was certainly before any form of pre-fabrication. I would love to see it bought to life with a celebration like this.

For seating I have used a collection of mismatched bentwood chairs that I purchased at an auction a few months ago.

Like many people, I have a nostalgic attachment to rock candy. They were a treat that my grandmother would give to me whenever I visited her. Here I have just placed them in a message bottle as a wedding favor. Perhaps a nice idea to handwrite a little message to insert too.

I like flowers to be loose and organic. Obviously there wasn’t a florist in sight for this arrangement [below]. Instead, the stems were just cut and placed into a collection of milkglass vases.

(All items, expect for the garlands, are available from the Ojoli Flea Market very soon!)

Pure & General

Pure & General

Pure & General

I just got back from a week in Sydney which was BUSY but brilliant, and filled with many new discoveries!   One of my most FAVOURITE finds was this brand new store in Potts Point – Pure & General!  OMIGOD so so beautiful.  Truly.  Proprietor Linda Gregoriou (whose impressive credentials include property developer, urban designer and ex-judge on the ABC’s New Inventors!?) opened the doors just last week, and although it’s tucked away down a quiet side street, there are plenty of whispers about Sydney’s newest retail store already… Pure & General certainly won’t stay secret for long!

After a year overseas sourcing her unique collection of homewares, furniture, toys and soft furnishings from across the globe, Linda has ensured her store is stocked to the brim with pieces you truly won’t find anywhere else in Australia.  Stunning timber vessels from Japan and Morocco, glassware and ceramics from France, cashmere from the UK and tablelinen from France and Japan… it’s just the most exquisite collection of product under one roof.  There’s a cafe on the way too, thanks to Linda’s friend and collaborator Cassie Karinsky, who has a background in hospitality consultancy and interiors styling, and who spent time living and working in Marrakech before recently returning to Sydney.

Pure & General is seriously UNMISSABLE.  One of the loveliest and most unique retail concepts I’ve seen anywhere in Aus.  It’s like a little piece of Merci or 10 Corso Como right here in Sydney.  I must thank my dear friends Megan Morton and Liane Rossler for taking me to Pure & General (twice!).

New Guest Blogger – Amanda Woods from Ojoli

Amanda Woods of Ojoli joins us for a week of inspired events styling ideas on the Guest Blog!

After our whirlwind visit to Colombia with Marcela last week, today we’re back on home soil with Amanda Woods of Ojoli!  Amanda’s background is in marketing & events, but she recently made the big move to northern NSW to be with her farmer hubbie in the country!

To feed her passion for events and styling whilst based in Goondiwindi, Amanda has launched Ojoli – a website dedicated to showcasing event & interior styling ideas.  She currently has a small Etsy shop, however she also has grand plans to launch an Ojoli ‘Flea Market’ very soon too, where you will be able to shop online for a range of cute props and styling elements for events and parties.  Watch this space!

Do pop over to the Guest Blog each day this week for a daily dose of inspired event styling ideas, expertly curated by Amanda!

Event Ideas by Ojoli – Blue and White Tea Party

Today we welcome Amanda Woods to the Guest Blog! Amanda has recently launched her gorgeous website Ojoli which is filled with delightful event and styling ideas. This week Amanda will be sharing 5 different concepts for 5 themed events – each day will be packed full of ideas you can use for your next event. Thanks Amanda!  – Jenny x

Hello Design Files readers,

I’m thrilled to be a guest here this week – many thanks Lucy and Jenny for the invitation.

I’m just about to launch a little website called Ojoli. It’s a site to visit for event styling concepts, decor & gifts. I designed Ojoli to offer Australian (and international) consumers a ‘Brooklyn Flea market’ meets ‘Donna Hay Store’ online experience.

Prior to marrying my farmer husband, I work in the PR & Events industry. Like many creatively minded people though, I always found that I was more interested in creating and bringing to life event concepts (rather than trying to fill up the guest list with VIP’s!)

So this week I have come up with five different concepts. Starting with ideas from ‘before the big day’ through to the ‘nesting newbies’ stage of life.

Blue and White Collections Tea Party

This idea really stemmed from something that my beautiful sister (& maid-of-honour) organised for me before my own wedding.  I’m a little prudish when it comes to male strippers and penis straws,  so instead she organised a ‘kitchen tea’. Carrying on from this idea, I thought a party that helped a bride-to-be start her own mismatched blue and white collection might be an idea. It’s a fail safe traditional design combination, but the look can certainly be updated with modern pieces.

The drawing is just of a garden shed – I thought it would be a quaint backdrop for this sort of occasion.

Shots of pink and cobalt blue glass can certainly help modernise this look. I love the ‘Blue Prints’ series that Lightly and Samantha Parsons collaborated to design. They are a beautiful modern collectable that can complement any existing collection.

ps. Other than the blue glassware, all of the items featured here will available from Ojoli very soon!

Interview – Cathy Hope of Douglas & Hope

Details from Douglas & Hope in Fitzroy

Quilts, cushions and accessories by Cathy Hope

Douglas & Hope, Brunswick st, Fitzroy

If you are in Melbourne, you should defo buy The Age today, because it comes with the Melbourne Magazine, where you will find another page of locally designed loveliness from me. :) 6 beautiful handmade QUILTS from 6 wonderful local designers  One of the very lovely quilts featured is by Cathy Hope of Melbourne’s much loved boutique Douglas & Hope, who I have been keen to interview for quite some time!

Cathy opened Douglas & Hope 12 years ago. That is a helluva long time in retail-land, and Brunswick street was certainly a very different place back then!  Since then D&H has gathered a cult following amongst many style-savvy Melbourne ladies.  Remember in 1999 when EVERYONE in Melbourne had one of those D&H tote bags, with a different fabric on the front and the back?!  Yes you know the ones.  Over the years D&H have become known for their pretty yet quirky and eclectic product range – including quilts, cushions and lightshades designed by Cathy, other product by local designers such as Beci Orpin, and many obscure but brilliant international finds.

Like many local designer / retailers, Cathy juggles the design and production of her ranges with the everyday demands of running a busy retail store.  What you mightn’t know is she’s also a single Mum with twin boys, and she lives in CASTLEMAINE!  BONUS points right there, Cathy.

Do read on for an insight into one of Melbourne’s favourite indie design retailers!

Douglas & Hope will also be at MARKIT @ Fed Square this weekend!

One of Douglas & Hope mascot owls on the left (not for sale sorry!), and gorgeous Marimekko bag on the right.

Tell us a little about your background – what path led you to opening Douglas & Hope originally?

My background before Douglas & Hope was in fashion production, and I had started my clothing label – Immune.

I had been making quilts since I was taught by my aunty at 21, I went on to study garment construction and studio textiles at RMIT, but never finished as Douglas & Hope was taking up most of my time by then.

Fashion range

How has D&H changed in the last 12 years since you first opened?  Has your vision for the business changed since you first set up shop?

When Douglas & Hope first opened my focus was more on fashion, and wanting an outlet to sell my quilts, as no-one else was selling quilts back then.  In the last few years I found myself wanting to design more product for the home, soft furnishings and homewares – melamine is my latest love!  I have a new range out and there is another on the way….

Melamine things from Douglas & Hope

How would you describe the Douglas & Hope aesthetic?

The aesthetic of Douglas & Hope is happy, colourful, thought out utilitarian pieces.  My quilts look best on a bed with white linen, they become the feature of the room. I think walking in to a Douglas & Hope store it may seem a bit ‘over the top’, but in context the individual pieces look incredible in your home, we have customers who come back time and again for more cushions, they are addictive.

My own home is decorated very differently to what people may think, quite white with color accents…. Lots of cushions and art….. and quilts for miles….

In addition to running your business you are mum to twins!  It must be a super busy household!   What’s your secret for balancing your business and family life successfully?  Are you good at outsourcing / delegation?

My secret is keeping weekends free for my boys, and just ‘being’ as opposed to rushing around madly, we escape to the country 9/10 weekends. During the week its quite mad juggling kinder, work, kids….

I outsource the kids to childcare and to their grandparents!

I individually co-ordinate every Douglas & Hope item, every cushion combination, every quilt and lampshade, but outsource the sewing, quilting and printing…..

Interior – Douglas & Hope, Fitzroy

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

Coffee and checking emails, a quick run into the city to drop off stock, I am constantly sourcing new product and dealing with manufacturers, then more emailing and visiting factories….. updating my blog….. sewing quilts together, cutting cushions…..

Where do you turn for creative inspiration – travel, local and international print media, books or the web etc?

Inspiration comes when you least expect it… I am an avid people watcher, magazine devourer, and try to keep an eye on a few international blogs. At least once a year I will travel overseas, mainly Asia, Bali, Thailand, and then I can mix holiday with a bit of work.

We spend most Summer holidays at Wilsons Promontory National Park, and the colour combinations you find in nature can often be the best.

Which other designers, retailers, creative people do you admire?

For a long time I have been drawn to the work of Phillippe Starke, I bought a piece of his when I lived in London in my early 20’s, and since then subconsciously I have bought many other pieces, chairs, gnome tables, I admire how he seems to make design accessible and fun.

Most recently I admire Ben Quilty and Dane Lovett’s artwork, and would LOVE to own some.

I love Natalie Wood as a designer, she does a great job with her label Something Else.

What would be your dream creative project?

I have wanted for 20 years to spend time in an Amish community, they make the most beautiful quilts in the world, live the most simple lives, just to work along side them is my idea of heaven.

More recently I have been wanting to set up some quilting groups/classes with Aboriginal women, I imagine they would create an amazing style of their own, I am still working on the logistics of this one, but it will happen one day…..

What are you looking forward to?

Douglas & Hope is participating in their first MARKIT @ Fed Square on May 29th, it should be lots of fun, come down and say hello…..

Melbourne Questions

Your favourite Melbourne neighbourhood and why?

Fitzroy, Brunswick Street remains as one of the most independent shopping strips in Melbourne, it’s close to the city, great shops, restaurants and cafes…

What/where was the last great meal you ate in Melbourne?

I love Joes Shoe store in Northcote, pizza can be ordered from Meine Liebe next door and eaten while you have a drink, I’m happy, kids happy!!

I also loved Izakaya Den recently for a friends birthday.

Where would we find you on a typical Saturday morning?

At the country market near my house in Castlemaine, we meet up with friends, have a coffee, stock up on all local produce to feed us for the weekend, as well as plants and herbs, we spend a lot of time in the garden, and now the drought is over we can finally grow vegetables.

The boys have broccoli and peas on the go at the moment, and we had figs, nashi pears and nectarines this year too.

Melbourne’s best kept secret?

La Belle Miette, the best macarons in Melbourne, Hardware Lane.  My favorite is the pink grapefruit, and the violet and blueberry, and to quote my son Rocket, ‘mum they are so yummy I can’t stop eating them’.
