Upon A Fold in Japan – Design Hub

After yesterday’s amazing finds at the Oedo markets, Justine is back today with more Tokyo-goodness to share… this time we follow her personal tour of Tokyo’s Design Hub – an amazing space dedicated to showcasing and promoting all things design.  Here Justine rounds up her favourite exhibits in the current  ‘Design to Change the World’ exhibition – so inspiring!  ps) I want one of those ‘PermaNets’! – Lucy x

One thing I noticed in Tokyo was that good design exists everywhere, and when I wasn’t on a quest for paper shops, I was taking in some of the design hot spots Tokyo has to offer.

Design Hub, inside the Tokyo Midtown complex is a place where designers gather to discuss, discover, create and connect on all things related to design. It opened its doors in 2007 with the aim of becoming an action center for design – a place where new ideas, experimentation and innovation would emerge.

I was lucky enough to get a personal tour of Design Hub and Tokyo Midtown by my dear friends Miyamoto and Waka. Miyamoto was involved in the architectural design for the Galleria area of the complex, so he knew a lot about everything and was happy to answer my 101 questions – starting with, are there any paper shops in here? And btw, there are!

Design Hub hosts exhibitions throughout the year. These exhibitions vary in subject matter but generally all work towards designing solutions for everyday issues. The exhibition space also provides many opportunities for young designers to have their ideas seen and heard by leaders in the design industry.

An exhibition called ‘Design to Change the World’ was showing when we visited Design Hub. It showcased an amazing collection of 80 products designed to help improve the lives of people living in poverty. ‘What can design do to help those in our world living on less than two dollars a day?’ This was the question up for discussion with the following 8 categories represented – water, food, energy, health, housing, mobility, education and connectivity.

Solutions to help with energy, food, health and water issues.

PermaNet – A ready-to-use mosquito net, that is impregnated with an odourless and biodegradable insecticide.

I recognised one of the designs as the ‘One Laptop Per Child’. Over a million of these low-cost laptops have now been given to children around the world to help them better their lives through education. In the image below Miyamoto shows my husband Matt exactly how it works!

Here are some of the other inventions that were on show. I must say, that day I never felt more proud to be a designer. To see design put to such good use was really so inspiring!

Design Hub is run by four of Japans leading design organisations, including the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA). Seminars, talks, and workshops are an everyday occurrence here and it’s easy to see why this place is considered the core or hub of art and design in Tokyo.

Close by are many other art and design sites definitely worth checking out. I’ve listed some of my favourites below.

MAIIKEstore

Images from the brand new MAIIKEstore in Hawthorn!

I feel like a totally negligent local blogger for not mentioning  Maiike before now.   Sorry Maiike!   Local crafter Aly Peel makes these gorgeous soft toys, scarves, cushions and quilts from re-cycled knits in the most beautiful soft colour palettes… they are seriously so lovely you must go look at Aly’s Flickr to really understand the cuteness.

Somehow, in-between crafting up a storm, being a Mum, and teaching keen young fashion students at RMIT, Aly has managed to open her very own brand new shop in Hawthorn!  Amazing!  …and it looks SO freakin’ cute, too!

The Maiike shop has been a labour of love for Aly and co, who have fitted out their gorgeous little space with a mismatch of reclaimed floorboards and, apparently,  ‘furniture sourced from the finest hard rubbish nature strips, trash and treasure markets and garage sales’! Nice one!

MAIIKEstore stocks all Maiike’s beautiful things, plus a brand new range of cotton childrens wear, as well as many lovely things by other local crafters – including ceramics by Alistair Whyte, jewellery by Dani M, organic wooden toys and towels from Muku and knitted items for adults and children by UIMI.

AWESOME WORK MAIIKE!

Upon A Fold in Japan – Oedo Antique Markets

- This week I am SO excited to welcome the lovely Justine Fahd from Upon a Fold to the TDF guest blog!  Justine has a serious paper-addiction, so it is not surprising she’s also a huge fan of all things Japanese!  This week Justine will take us through highlights of her recent trip to Japan… be warned, you’ll be itching for a plane ticket by Friday! (I am already!) – Lucy x

Some of the amazing treasures at Oedo Antique Market – wooden dolls, printing materials and so many prints and scrolls!

Hi! My name is Justine and I have a little online paper shop and blog called Upon A Fold. Paper makes me happy, yes it does! And well, it seems sharing all my paper finds makes other people happy too. So that’s what I do on a daily basis and it’s seriously loads of fun.

Much of my focus is on Japan, simply because paper is truly celebrated there and very much a part of everyday life. Thankfully Japan is only a 10 hour flight away from my home in Sydney and on a recent visit to Tokyo I discovered a few interesting facts, like…

- 7 hours is not nearly enough time to discover a 9 level paper shop,
- There is no such thing as too many paper shops, no siree!
- 2 weeks is nowhere near enough time to discover all the paper shops in Tokyo, and be warned paper lovers, I left my heart in Tokyo and so might you!

When Lucy asked me to be a guest blogger on this gorgeous blog, I thought it would be a great opportunity to relive some good experiences and to share with you some of my favourite Japanese things – from products to take pleasure in, design to desire and places to pay a visit to next time you’re there, starting with this wonderful outdoor antique market called Oedo.

Oedo Antique Market in the Tokyo by Tokyo guidebook

I learnt about these markets from a little guidebook called Tokyo by Tokyo. Momoko Tsuruya a travel writer and Tokyoite, had it as one of her ‘must visit’ places in Tokyo. And I’m so glad she did, because there was no better way to start our Sunday exploring, than this. I love a good market!

The Oedo Antique Market takes place on the first and third Sunday of each month in the beautiful leafy courtyard of the Tokyo International Forum. It started in 2003 and has now become the largest open-air antique markets in Japan, with around 250 stalls.

There is so much to be found here from traditional Japanese pieces like vintage Kimonos and wooden dolls to retro toys, antique tools, rare books, prints and scrolls, fabrics, furniture and more.

These markets offer a glimpse into the way the Japanese lived and the things they collected from the Edo period through the Meiji period, to the present day. This is a great place to pick up some authentic Japanese souvenirs and rare antique pieces.

Next up I’ll show you a great place to visit to indulge the designer in you! And if you would like to discover some amazing paper shops in Tokyo just visit my blog. There you will find many Tokyo and paper posts with lots of pics and lovely links too.

Vintage glassware, tools and kitchenware – oh my!

This week on the Guest Blog – Justine Fahd from Upon a Fold!

Highlights from Tokyo’s Oedo Markets from Justine’s guest blog this week!

Despite having only launched in February this year, Sydney-based online store Upon a Fold has already won a place in the hearts of many local paper-lovers… I don’t know how she does it, but Justine Fahd is doing such a seriously incredible job of finding beautiful papery stuff you really don’t see anywhere else! Do pop over and check out Upon a Fold’s brilliant range of stationery, pop-up books, cards and unique paper gifts and accessories – it is just the most perfect collection.

Truth be told, I can’t quite get enough of Justine’s beautiful products… or her beautiful home, or her beautifully-designed website, or her beautiful paper-loving blog…. SO I decided I’d steal her for some guest blogging action!  This week on the guest blog Justine will share some of her favourite design finds (papery and non-papery) from a recent trip to Japan!

Be warned, come Friday I think we’ll all be itching for a plane ticket! (I am already!)

Down Girl – The Wild Collective

- Oh My.  I am not sure how I will cope without Down Girl next week!  I am so sad to see her go!  How will I know what to wear in the morning?  We shall all have to make a point of visiting Lizzy’s blog very regularly for our weekly Down Girl  fix!

HUGE thanks to Lizzy for her stellar performance this week!  What a natural! – Lucy x

Hello! How have you been since we last spoke? It only feels like yesterday since we were together, oh hang on…! Well, sadly I am flying the coop as today is my last day in the cozy Design Files nest. Lucy has been so accommodating, sharing her feed and lovely home with me. I have had so much fun and in turn maybe inspired myself a little too much. While hunting I possibly gathered a few too many things to take home with me. I think I will need to hibernate for the weekend and save some pennies for my next adventure in the big wild world of fashion.

So, today’s fashion collective is inspired by nothing else but my inner animal instincts and calling to nature. I have always had a strong love for forest creatures and native objects, I find it very hard not to be hypnotized by a wild, nature-inspired aesthetic. We all have that inner animal (like max) that sometimes calls us to be wild and do things like run down the street howling at the moon with our pack of friends. I know I constantly have these inner urges. I just have to make sure I am in like-minded company when ‘the rats’ take over, Friday afternoon in the studio tends to be a common place where wildness begins.

I know your thinking what is ‘the rats’? Well, you actually know because I’m sure you’ve had them before. Its that inner scream feeling that you have to suppress, its when you’re so revved up that you can’t concentrate on anything but being crazy and wild. Nothing will bring you back from ‘the rats’, you must just let it out.

Well, its been so nice to know you and so nice to visit you everyday. I hope I see you again some time soon.

Fond farewells & Friday night wildness,
DG xx
